ADVOCATE NEWSPAPER
After nearly two decades of working with young people,
Dave Reardon has written and published a book outlining
the many things he’s learnt and believes are important
in developing an effective youth ministry. Soundtrack
for Youth Revolution is a practical guide to fine-tuning
a youth group and helping encourage young people to
become involved in the church.
The book takes a ‘hands on’ approach to
making sure a youth ministry is biblically sound. It
is divided into three sections, namely ‘Love God’,
‘Love Others’ and ‘Love Life’.
Dave is clear in the introduction that while large churches
and youth events are powerful in their own way, he believes
that youth groups and outreach programs of all sizes
are important.
“From the fledgling afternoon program with 12
chaotic kids in a hot little community hall, right through
to the mega-church youth ministry with flashing lights
and 1000+ excited youth — they all rock and rule
in God’s eyes,” he says.
“It’s all about big and small ministries
working together — each serving their unique purpose
in the Kingdom, reaching and preaching to different
people. Only together can we fulfil the mandate proclaimed
in mark 16:15 ,’Go into all the world and preach
the good news to all creation.’”
The book is also careful to address the lifestyle of
youth leaders by acknowledging the pressure youth work
sometimes places on leaders’ family relationships
and personal spirituality. Dave discusses a number of
issues that those in the ministry may face, and ways
they can avoid becoming disenchanted.
“While it is exciting when a young person gets
switched on for Jesus, over time we realised that we
also had a responsibility to build the whole person”,
Dave says.
The book also includes contributions from people working
with youth in different states and countries, including
Mosaic’s Art Director Joby Harris from Los Angeles
and Mike Gugglielmucci from Planetshakers.
Dave now ministers at Champion Lakes Christian Church;
previously, he has lead the Western Australian YouthAlive
team and also worked as a journalist. For more information
